Papers in any area of consciousness studies are welcome. Papers should be roughly 3,000-4,000 words and subsequent presentations, should the presenter choose to make one, should be about 20 minutes (though longer papers/presentations are acceptable). Submissions, suitable for blind review, should be sent to consciousnessonline@gmail.com by December 5th 2011. Those interested in being referees or commentators should also contact me. Authors of accepted papers are urged to make, or have made, some kind of audio/visual presentation (e.g. narrated powerpoint or video of talk) though this is not required to present.

First, after over a year and a half of work the special issue of Consciousness and Cognition featuring re-written papers from CO2, new commentaries, and author’s responses is now complete and is scheduled to be printed in early 2012!

Secondly, I am happy to announce that the papers from CO3 are under contract to be published as a book in Springer’s series Studies in Brain and Mind (pending outside review) under the tentative title Phenomenology and the Neurophilosophy of Consciousness. The volume will feature papers, commentaries, and author responses. I am also happy to announce that nearly all of the conference presenters and commenters have agreed to submit something. I will have to wait until the review process is over to give a detailed list but I can say that the book looks to be very promising and I am very happy to be working on this project.

Finally a brief word about CO4, scheduled for February 2012. There are truly exciting possibilities for the invited part of the conference. I am still working out the details so cannot let the quale out of the bag just yet; but stay tuned! What I can say now is that there will be a keynote session by Bernard Baars entitled “Global Workspace Theory: Six necessary conditions for consciousness”. Also, I have accepted proposals for two special sessions. The first, organized by James Dow, is on ‘The Social Conditions for Self-Consciousness’ and the second, organized by Myrto Mylopoulos, is on ‘Action Consciousness’. I have every reason to believe that these sessions will be excellent and I can’t wait to see what James and Myrto come up with.

Last year I started a test program of having people organize special sessions, with the result being Jacob Berger’s excellent session featuring Benj Hellie with commentary by Susanna Schellenberg, Jeff Speaks, Jacob Berger, and Heather Logue. I would like to do more like this for CO4. To that end I have already accepted a proposal from James Dow to organize a special session on “The Social Conditions of Self-Consciousness,” and I would like to take this opportunity to announce a general call for proposals to organize special sessions. Things are already moving for CO4 in 2012. One thing that I will be trying to do is to bring some kind of synchronous online sessions to the conference. I do not want to eliminate the asynchronous comment-at-your-own-pace element but rather to supplement it with live face-to-face presentations and discussion with the help of Bernard Baars, who will also be giving a keynote talk. This year I also had a special session organized by Jake Berger and I am interested in expanding this kind of thing. The ASSC usually has a call for submitted thematic symposia and I am wondering if this might be something worth doing here?

Also, since Youtube has let me upload videos without length restrictions I have uploaded the keynote talks from previous years at my ConsciousnessOnline channel (there are also some talks of mine and some videos of the New York Consciousness Collective).

Finally, Consciousness Online will host a series of lectures on the science and philosophy of consciousness beginning with introductory lectures given by Dr. Baars and eventually inviting speakers. The videos will be available to download or to watch streaming, though we will not open discussion on them (or if we do perhaps it will be without the commitment of the speaker to participate). So look out for that!

In general I am very interested in ways of improving the online conference as well as experimenting and expanding, so please any feedback is welcome! Richard

Parkside Lounge is located at 307 W. houston at Attorney st. We go on at 9:30 and willplay until at least midnight. If you haven’t been before it is fun. The Parkside Lounge is a nice bar with strong drinks a pool table a foozball table and various philosophers and cognitive scientists who don’t know care that they are terrible musicians, so come on down and have a drink with us!
